Deitrich Bonhoeffer is a familiar name to many of us here at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis. John W. de Gruchy explores Bonhoeffer's connection to a broken world that is bereft with sin, seen in varying degrees from the Covid-19 pandemic to the war in Ukraine. Author John de Gruchy, emeritus professor of Christin studies at the University of Cape Town, has lived in South Africa's struggle for a just society and was deeply formed by Bonhoeffer's thought and life.
Gruchy's book, Faith Facing Reality: Stirring Up Discussion with Bonhoeffer attempts to "stir up discussion and inform action in connecting the worldly," with the present reality of the reign and rule of Jesus Christ. The book has five major sections: racism's persistence, the will-to-power, scientism and technology, the conflict between Israel and Palestine, and the threat of wars and pandemics.
