Brief Biography

Zwingli was born in Wildhausen of the Switzerland in 1484. He was educated at the University of Vienna, soon becoming a classical teacher at Basil. Zwingli was chosen to be the pastor of Glarus. Zwingli arranged for the passing of law in 1522 in the canton of Zurich that abolished all alliances and subsidies for a 25 year term. After discovering the corruption of the Roman Catholic Church and, in his teaching before breaking with the Roman Catholic Church, brought people to read the New Testament for themselves, overturning ecclesiastical traditions in the process. Zwingli’s understanding of the Lord’s Supper differed markedly from Luther and Calvin, understanding it as only commemorative and symbolical. Zwingli was mortally wounded when the Treaty of Coppel was broken in 1529.
