Introduction to Church History

Martin Luther at the Diet of Worms (1521) by Anton von Werner (Public domain)

What You Will Find in This Guide

This introduction to church history uses a traditional division of church history into four time periods: early (ca. 30–500), medieval (500–1500), Reformation/early modern (1500–1700), and modern (1700–present). There is a tab for each of these periods at the top of this page that will take you to a page of resources appropriate for that era. The first tab is labeled "General Works" and that page lists resources appropriate to the entire 2,000 years of church history. The final tab is labeled "Global Christianity" and that page lists resources for modern church history that focus on the majority world.

Each page lists a variety of resources grouped and labeled by type. These include histories, which are narrative accounts of the church in that time period, dictionaries and encyclopedias, bibliographies, atlases, and databases, as well as a few other types of resource. Items labeled "Advanced" require knowledge of primary source languages.
