When preparing an exegetical paper, sermon, Bible study, or other assignment, the number of commentaries available can at first seem overwhelming. This guide is intended to, without being prescriptive, provide a very brief overview of series (and some individual volumes) that the Concordia Seminary library owns, identifying some strengths or areas of focus, and also stating some cautions.
It is organized primarily by series (e.g. commentary sets that cover the whole Bible, the Old Testament, and the New Testament), but also includes lists of especially helpful monographs or small sets, a few books that give overviews of commentaries, and several other references. Commentaries here are those that cover a text in a verse-by-verse fashion (as opposed to those thematically arranged).
However, some monographs by particularly knowledgeably authors that provide helpful thematic commentary are included in additional tabs.
